In his tariff letter addressed to the Japanese Prime Minister, Donald Trump expressed, 'It is an honor to write to you as it reflects the strength and commitment of our trade relationship.' Trump further articulated, 'Despite the trade deficit the United States holds with your esteemed country, we have continued to work together. We've decided to move forward, but with a more balanced and fair trade approach.'

He continued in his tariff letter stating, beginning August 1, 2025, the US shall impose a distinct 25% tariff on any and all Japanese goods entering the United States.
Trump Asserts: '25% Tariff Could Be Considered Low...'
Amidst the imposition of tariffs on Japan, Donald Trump considered this 25% tariff low, claiming that it is far less than the necessary figure to ameliorate the trade deficit with Japan. Trump elaborated, 'As you may know, if Japanese companies choose to manufacture goods within the US, no tariff will be applied.'
A Dozen Trade Letters Signed
Last week, President Trump revealed during an onboard conversation on Air Force One with reporters that he signed trade letters targeting approximately a dozen countries, to be released on Monday. It was clarified how much tariff each country would face and where exceptions might be made. Pre-existing speculation had anticipated Japan and South Korea's inclusion in the list.
