Trump reiterated that his conversation with President Putin spanned two hours and deemed it productive. Prospective ceasefire discussions will soon take place, potentially leading to conflict resolution. Matters of contention between both nations will be on the table. Trump remarked on Russia's eagerness for extensive trade relations with the U.S., envisioning future cooperation once peace is achieved.
Trump expressed his concern, stating, "It's heartbreaking to learn about the weekly loss of approximately 5,000 soldiers, with the real figure potentially even higher. We are striving to halt this bloodshed. Terrifying satellite images speak volumes of the calamity." He added, "This isn’t our war, nor mine. We are left handling the remnants of the previous administration's unfinished agenda. Such authorization wouldn’t have occurred under my watch."
Post-meeting, Trump briefed Ukrainian President Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
Putin's Perspective
Following the meeting with Trump, Russian President Putin affirmed readiness to draft peace agreements with Ukraine. However, it requires addressing the core conflict first.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced, "I've communicated twice today with President Trump. A one-on-one meeting with President Trump preceded talks with President Putin. This is a crucial turning point, showcasing whether global leaders can secure a ceasefire and lasting peace."
Zelensky emphasized, "Before bilateral negotiations, I conveyed to President Trump that Ukraine seeks an unconditional ceasefire. Should Russia resist halting violence, stringent sanctions must be enforced. Peace hinges upon these imposed sanctions."
He further expressed readiness for dialogue with Russia in any format, considering locations like Türkiye, the Vatican, and Switzerland as potential venues. Zelensky stated, "Convincing Ukraine isn't imperative; our delegates are poised to make decisive choices."
