Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's interim advisor Muhammad Yunus met on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. It was their first official meeting after the political upheaval in Sheikh Hasina's government. Following this meeting, Muhammad Yunus presented a special gift to PM Modi.
After the bilateral discussions in Bangkok, Yunus gifted PM Modi a photograph. This photograph dates back to January 3, 2015, when PM Modi awarded Yunus a gold medal during the inauguration of the 102nd Indian Science Congress in Mumbai.

He was honored for his remarkable contributions to the social sciences. The event, attended by over 12,000 delegates, took place at Mumbai University from January 3 to 7, 2015.
Prior to this, Bangladesh formally requested a meeting between PM Modi and Muhammad Yunus, which India accepted, leading to their interaction. This was a bilateral talk held alongside the BIMSTEC Summit.
This meeting is considered a crucial diplomatic move amid the current strained phase in India-Bangladesh relations. Both leaders were previously seen together at a dinner hosted by Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Notably, this meeting occurred when Muhammad Yunus was embroiled in controversies following his dialogue with President Xi Jinping during his visit to China. In China, Bangladesh's chief advisor, Yunus, stated that Dhaka is the sole guardian of the region's seas. Inviting China to invest in his country, Yunus reportedly highlighted India's constraints while seducing China with promising business prospects in Bangladesh.
