The weather took a sudden chill in Delhi-NCR on Sunday evening with the advent of rain. This has resulted in an increase in cold across the region. The weather department warns of a significant cold wave hitting Delhi and Northern India.
According to the latest forecasts from the weather department, between December 10 and December 14, a cold wave might strike the region. Special caution is advised for residents of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Western Uttar Pradesh, as they will face biting cold alongside widespread fog.
The Chilling Effect of Rain
The weather department had predicted that December 8 would bring cloudy skies and light rain in Delhi and its surrounding areas, which indeed happened as suggested. The rain on Sunday evening has intensified the cold in Delhi.
Currently, Delhi records a minimum temperature hovering around 7°C, but given the increasing cold, it is expected to plummet further and could reach around 3°C post-December 10. Snowfall in the Himalayas and the Western Disturbance phenomenon might contribute to even colder conditions in Delhi and all of Northern India.
What's the Forecast for the Coming Days?
Additionally, dense fog is anticipated in several areas of Northern India on December 9 and 10, potentially disrupting everyday life. Hisar in Haryana is leading the cold front in the plains of Northern India, witnessing minimum temperatures reaching down to 4.7°C.
Reports suggest that in Delhi, the minimum temperature may gradually decrease by 2-3°C by December 11, 2024. The second week (December 12-18, 2024) will likely continue this cold spell. Early December has already seen fog alerts. Dense fog is expected in various regions of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, notably from the night of December 7 until the morning of December 10.
