A significant political development has emerged in Bangladesh. Tarique Rahman, son of the severely ill former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Khaleda Zia, is set to return to Bangladesh on December 25 after a 17-year self-imposed exile. This information was shared by the BNP on Friday, coinciding with the announcement of upcoming general election dates, sparking intensified political activities.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir informed the media after a party standing committee meeting, "We are pleased to announce the return of our Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Dhaka on December 25. The party welcomes him." Rahman has resided in London for the past 17 years, leading the party virtually.

This announcement comes at a time when 80-year-old Khaleda Zia's condition is extremely critical. She has been admitted to Dhaka's Evercare Hospital since November 23 due to numerous health complications. On Thursday, her condition worsened, requiring ventilator support to allow her lungs and other vital organs some respite.

Tarique Rahman: A Potential Prime Ministerial Candidate?

The BNP has already clarified that if Khaleda Zia is unable to physically assume the Prime Minister's role, Rahman would be positioned as the Prime Minister in case the party returns to power. His return is seen not just as a family matter but also a strategic political maneuver.

Interim Government Following Student Movement

Bangladesh experienced significant political upheaval in August 2024, following student-led violent protests that ousted the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government from power. The BNP has since reemerged as a prominent contender. Currently, an interim government led by Mohammad Yunus is in place.

The Election Commission has announced the 13th parliamentary elections for February 12. Rahman's return could not only invigorate the BNP but also significantly influence the power balance in the forthcoming elections.
