The banned militant group, United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I), claims that they had planted 19 bombs across Assam intending to disrupt Independence Day celebrations. The purpose was to demonstrate their might through explosions on this significant occasion.
ULFA-I explains that the bombs were installed in regions such as Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, and Guwahati. The organization intended to execute several explosions from 6 am to 12 noon on Independence Day to demonstrate their strength. However, technical hindrances led to the plan's failure.
In addition to their earlier statements, the organization has urged authorities to locate and deactivate these explosives to prevent any threat to the public. Meanwhile, the police have reportedly recovered some suspicious items from Sivasagar and Nagaon.
The bombs were reportedly planted in several areas across Assam such as the DTO Office, ONGC Gate Number 5, Dibrugarh Lakwa Tiniali, ASTC, Lakhimpur ASTC, SP Office, Laluk Daily Market, Bargaht Police Outpost, Nagaon Medical College, Guwahati, Gandhi Mandap, Narengi Army Camp, Pan Bazaar, Jorabat Overbridge, Bheta Para, Maligaon, Rajgarh, Nalbari, and Rangiya.
The organization was formed in 1979 demanding "Sovereign Assam" and has since been involved in destructive activities, leading to its ban by the central government in 1990. In 2010, ULFA split into two factions. On November 22, 2023, ULFA-I planned an attack on an army camp located in the Kakopather area of Tinsukia district, Assam.
