Reports are pouring in of waterlogging across various areas in Delhi-NCR following a stormy and rainy Sunday morning. In Delhi, regions like Moti Bagh, Minto Road, and near Airport Terminal 1 are plagued by stagnated water, making vehicular movement challenging. A car was spotted submerged at Minto Road due to severe water accumulation.

Early Sunday saw heavy rains in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Gurugram. This downpour resulted in a temperature drop, providing much-needed relief from the scorching heat. However, many parts of the capital city experienced significant waterlogging, greatly disrupting traffic flow.

Areas in Delhi Witness Waterlogging

Visuals from Minto Road, Dwarka Flyover, Chanakyapuri, Subroto Park, and near Delhi Airport Terminal-1 show waterlogged streets. A car near Minto Road was completely submerged. Similarly, the posh areas of Chanakyapuri and Dwarka failed to handle the drainage woes. Rainwater inundated roads in the ITO region of Delhi.

Due to rain at Dhaula Kuan in Delhi, traffic congestion is observed, as vehicles crawl at a snail's pace.

Impact on Flight Operations

The thunderstorm and rain impacted over 100 flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). Reports indicate more than 25 flights were diverted, and several others delayed. The airport authority states pressure from last night's flights persists. Delhi Airport issued an advisory, urging passengers to regularly check their flight status and stay in touch with airline staff for updates.

A tree fell on Vasant Kunj Arora Asaf Ali Marg in Delhi, causing waterlogging and partially blocking the road. No streetlights were functioning on that street.

Electricity Supply Disruptions

Strong dusty winds, storms, and rainfall resulted in power outages in parts of Delhi. Areas like Bawana, Narela, Jahangirpuri, Civil Lines, Shakti Nagar, Model Town, Wazirabad, Dhirpur, and Burari faced electricity disruptions. Tata Power DDL reported temporarily cutting off power supply in some areas to prevent electric shocks and ensure safety, as trees and branches damaged power lines.

Luxury Cars Submerged

Waterlogging near the airport zone submerged underpasses, trapping luxury cars like BMWs and Mercedes. The main underpass linking Delhi to the airport saw severe waterlogging from the night's rain. Dozens of cars were submerged and damaged, with some owners abandoning their vehicles.

Rainfall ranged from 5 to 8 centimeters across various places in Delhi.

Rain Impact in Greater Noida West

Since Saturday night, Greater Noida West saw sporadic rain, with light drizzle continuing Sunday morning. Waterlogging persists in certain pockets, inconveniencing local residents. Similar heavy rain, accompanied by stormy winds, affected regions like Jhajjar and Karnal in Haryana. Different areas of Gurugram reported waterlogging.

Heavy waterlogging was observed outside the Civil Hospital, in areas like HUDA Sector 10 and Vikas Nagar in Gurugram. Several hours after rain, waterlogging worsened the situation.

Cleanup efforts are underway on Akbar Road following fallen trees due to the storm and rain.

IMD forecasts light to moderate rain and gusty winds over the next 24 hours. Experts indicate this rainy spell may be pre-monsoon activity.

Previously, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert Saturday for Delhi and nearby areas, warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds within the next two to three hours.

This alert is part of a nowcast warning based on current weather conditions. IMD mentions a storm cell approaching Delhi and surrounding regions from the west/northwest, expecting strong gusts or dusty winds (40-60 km/h or more) and lightning over the next one to two hours.

The weather department encourages taking necessary precautions. IMD advises staying away from open areas and seeking no shelter under trees, while cautioning against sitting against weak walls or unstable structures.

Potential storm impacts include uprooted trees and broken branches. Crops like bananas and papayas might suffer moderate damage. Dry tree branches could fall due to strong winds. Dust storms might affect parts of the city. Authorities urge the populace to remain vigilant and observe all safety measures for protection.
