Delhi: 13 Children Die at Asha Kiran Shelter Home Within a Month, Fact-Finding Team Formed

In July, the tragic deaths of 13 children at Asha Kiran in Rohini, Delhi have come to light. The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.

Delhi government minister Atishi stated that media reports have revealed that 13 children have died at Asha Kiran Home (for the mentally challenged) in Rohini, Delhi in July. These deaths are reportedly attributed to health issues and malnutrition, indicating that the children are not receiving adequate care.

Atishi expressed shock at hearing such news in the national capital and asserted that if found true, such negligence cannot be tolerated. This is a very serious issue that requires thorough investigation. Steps must be taken to improve the situation of all care homes to provide better facilities for these children.

She has ordered an immediate magisterial inquiry into the matter, with a report expected within 48 hours. Strict action will be taken against those found responsible.

Fact-Finding Team Formed

Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, stated that a fact-finding team is being sent to Asha Kiran Home in Rohini. This team will meet with all relevant officials and attempt to uncover the reasons behind these deaths. The team is also auditing night shelters run by the Delhi government.

27 Child Deaths This Year

The SDM noted that the figure of 13 child deaths in the past 20 days is quite high. Although the causes of death are still unknown, the SDM's investigation has confirmed the deaths. So far this year, 27 children have died, which is significantly higher compared to last year. Concerns about drinking water quality have also been raised by the SDM, but the exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem reports.

Delhi government minister Gopal Rai commented that while the BJP is staging protests, they did not protest in Mayur Vihar over the mother and child's death. However, they have reached Asha Kiran because it falls under the Delhi government’s jurisdiction. The concerned minister is closely monitoring the situation, and the Delhi government stands with the people. Those responsible will not be spared.
