Court Halts Trump's Order on Birthright Citizenship

On January 20th, President Donald Trump, newly inaugurated, issued several executive orders that have sparked significant controversy. Among them, he pardoned the accused from the January 6 Capitol Hill riots, ordering their immediate release, and issued an order to end birthright citizenship. These orders have been declared unconstitutional by several U.S. courts, which have suspended them.

Our partner website, India Today, has obtained copies of the American courts’ orders. These reveal that the courts' decisions present legal challenges to the implementation of President Trump’s orders, particularly concerning the Capitol Hill riots and the ending of birthright citizenship.

What Did the Court Say on Trump’s Order to End Birthright Citizenship?

Four Democrat-governed states challenged Trump’s order on birthright citizenship in court. After the hearing, District Judge John Coffner of Western Washington stated that if citizens with birthright citizenship are not recognized, they will lose funding they currently receive from the federal government.

The court issued a temporary restraining order effective from January 23, 2025, starting at 11:00 AM local time. This order has put a halt to President Trump’s executive order.

Pausing Trump's order, the court stated that the plaintiffs must prove their likelihood of success and show that the injunction is in the public interest.
