The Home Ministry has taken significant action against BSF Director General Nitin Agarwal, removing him from his position. Special DG YB Khurania has also been removed and sent back to his Odisha cadre, while Nitin Agarwal has been sent back to his original Kerala cadre. The Home Ministry has termed this move 'Premature Repatriation'.
It is believed that the continuous infiltration of terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir over the past year is the main reason for the removal of DG BSF and Special DG BSF.
This is the largest administrative action by the Indian government concerning terrorist infiltration in Jammu & Kashmir, and it has impacted senior most officials.

Additionally, continuous infiltration in the Punjab sector which was not effectively controlled is also considered a reason for this action. This is the first instance in several years where two senior most officers of any paramilitary force have been removed in such a manner. According to sources, new appointments will be made soon.
DG BSF Nitin Agarwal is a 1989 batch officer of the Kerala cadre, while Khurania is a 1990 batch officer of the Odisha cadre. Agarwal took charge as the head of the Border Security Force in June last year. Khurania was leading the force formation on the Pakistan border as Special Director General (West).
