Azam Khan's First Night in Jail: 7 Convictions, 5 Acquittals

Verdicts in 12 cases against Azam Khan have been announced. He's sentenced in 7 while acquitted in 5. For two PAN card offenses, both father and son received 7 years in prison, housed in Rampur Jail's Barrack No. 1, where they had a regular meal and spent the first night without any special requests.

The courts have rendered verdicts in 12 cases against prominent Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Mohammad Azam Khan. Monday's recent decision adds to a total of seven convictions, with acquittals in five other cases. The latest charges relate to obtaining and using two PAN cards, earning Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam each a seven-year sentence.

84 Cases Registered in 2019

In 2019, a staggering 84 cases were filed against Azam Khan. To date, only 12 have reached a court decision. One significant case was from Moradabad. On February 13, 2023, the MP-MLA Special Court in Moradabad sentenced Azam Khan and his son Abdullah to two years for obstructing the highway (Chhajlet case). Subsequently, Abdullah Azam lost his legislative membership.

Many verdicts related to Rampur emerged at different times. On October 27, 2022, a significant ruling from the MP-MLA Court (Magistrate Trial) sentenced Azam to three years for incendiary speech in the Milak police station case. This was later nullified in session court.

On July 15, 2023, another fiery speech case resulted in a two-year sentence with a fine of 2,500 rupees. The appeal against this decision was dismissed by the session court.

Fake Birth Certificate Fraud – Seven-Year Sentence

On October 18, 2023, Azam Khan, along with wife Tajin Fatima and son Abdullah Azam, received seven-year prison sentences for making dual birth certificates, under a ruling from the MP-MLA Special Court (Magistrate Trial).

Acquitted in Neighbor Assault Case

On December 23, 2023, a court cleared Azam Khan, his brother Sharif Khan, son Abdullah, and nephew Bilal of assaulting a neighbor due to insufficient evidence.

Four Major Dungarpur Rulings

Judgments were issued in four cases related to Dungarpur. On January 31, 2024, Azam Khan, retired CO Ale Hasan, and others were acquitted in the first ruling. On March 18, 2024, Azam was sentenced to seven years, while others received five-year terms in another verdict.

Three days later, on March 21, 2024, all accused were acquitted in the third case. On May 30, 2024, Azam Khan faced a severe sentence of 10 years and a 1.4 million rupee fine in the fourth instance, marking the harshest penalty against him so far. On July 31, 2024, yet another Dungarpur case saw Azam Khan and seven others cleared of charges.

2025 Acquittal over Incendiary Speech and Code Breach

On November 11, 2025, Azam Khan was acquitted for lack of evidence in a case concerning incendiary speech and electoral code violations filed at Civil Lines police station, registered by then SDM Sadar Prem Prakash Tiwari.

Current Case: Two PAN Cards, 7-Year Imprisonment

On Monday, the MP-MLA Special Court (Magistrate Trial) found Azam Khan and his son Abdullah guilty of obtaining and using two PAN cards, resulting in a seven-year sentence for each. This ruling came merely two months after their bail from Sitapur Jail, and they're sent back to imprisonment.

How Did Azam Khan Spend His Night in Jail?

Following sentencing, both were placed in Barrack No. 1 at Rampur District Jail. According to Jail Superintendent Rajesh Yadav, they received a typical meal of lentils, bread, vegetables, and morning tea-biscuits, similar to other inmates. They were allotted prisoner numbers 425 and 426, respectively, making no special demands and spending a routine night. The morning roll call, breakfast, and procedures continued per regulations.

Meetings and Security Protocols

The jail superintendent explained that visiting is limited to online registration and blood relations. For security, additional police are stationed outside the jail premises, and internal security is bolstered by additional wardens.
