A Kaleidoscope of India Reflected in the Lok Sabha Oath Ceremony

The inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced on June 24, marked by the swearing-in of newly-elected MPs. The ceremony showcased India's rich cultural tapestry and linguistic diversity, with representatives from various regions taking their oath in several languages, including their mother tongues.

The Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari administered the oath to PM Narendra Modi as an MP. PM Modi took his oath in Hindi. Pro-tem Speaker also administered oath to Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Faggan Singh Kulaste, and Radha Mohan Singh, all of whom took their oath in Hindi as well.

During the ceremony, when the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Education Minister were taking their oaths, the opposition displayed copies of the Constitution, reigniting the election atmosphere within the parliamentary session.

Bansuri Swaraj Takes Oath in Sanskrit

BJP MP from New Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj, took her oath in Sanskrit, following in the footsteps of her mother and senior BJP leader, Sushma Swaraj, who had taken her parliamentary oath in Sanskrit during her first tenure. Additionally, Shripad Yesso Naik from the North Goa parliamentary seat, who marked his sixth consecutive victory, also swore in Sanskrit.

Shambhavi Chaudhary Recites Oath from Memory

Shambhavi Chaudhary, an MP from Samastipur representing Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), recited her oath from memory. She had surpassed her Congress opponent with more than one hundred thousand votes.

Kerala MP Swears in Hindi

Congress Representative from Kerala, Kodikunnil Suresh, took the oath in Hindi, surprising the house and prompting applause and desk-thumping from fellow lawmakers. He also opted for Hindi during his oath-taking ceremony in 2019.

Dharmendra Pradhan Swears in Odia

The Education Minister and MP from Sambalpur, Odisha, Dharmendra Pradhan, swore in Odia. As he began, opposition members raised slogans linking his oath to the NEET examination and causing uproar, necessitating a rebuke.

Other MPs Take Oath in Native Languages

BJP MP from West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar took his oath in Bengali, while Muralidhar Mohol from Pune's parliamentary seat chose Marathi. In addition, the Union Minister and MP from Udhampur, Jitendra Singh, took his oath in Dogri, and TDP’s Ram Mohan Naidu swore in Telugu.
